Verizon's already revealed that it'll be making the move to tiered data plans this summer and, although all of the intricacies of Big Red's data plans have yet to be revealed, today the carrier did offer a bit of insight into how it'll deal with heavy data users once the tiered options go live. Speaking at the Barclays Capital Global Communications, Media, and Technology conference, Verizon Communications CFO Fran Shammo won't be capping or throttling users that exceed their monthly data allotment. Instead, those customers will be hit with overage charges. "The user that wants to use a lot [of data] will pay for it," Shammo said. The exec also reiterated Verizon's plans to switch to tiered pricing this summer, with family data plans to follow. Finally, Shammo touched a bit on his carrier's growing LTE network, saying that Verizon will basically be finished with its LTE rollout in most major markets by the end of next year.
The news that Verizon plans to charge overages to heavy data users rather than throttle or cap them isn't a huge surprise, but it is kind of a bummer for folks that like to use a lot of data and don't get in on the unlimited option before it goes the way of the dinosaurs.
