Heads up, Motorola DROID X owners: reports have been flying in this afternoon claiming that Android 2.3.3, aka Gingerbread, has silently been rolling out over the air to some DXs in the wild. The system version of the update is 4.5.588, and the update is allegedly being silently downloaded to some devices. Once downloaded, you should be notified that the update is ready to roll and will be given the option of installing then and there or holding off. It's being reported that, once the update is running on your handset, you can still roll back to your previous build using the 2.3.340 SBF. As usual, there is a manual update option available if you don't feel like waiting for the OTA, and you can find the download link and instructions at the source link below.
There's been no word from Verizon or Motorola about the DROID X Gingerbread update, which seems kind of strange if 2.3 actually is making its way to users. After all, you'd think that the DX getting the big 2.3 update would be something that both companies would want to crow about. We'll keep you updated if we hear something from either VZW or Moto. In the mean time, you DROID X owners will let us know if you get an update notification or if you go the manual install route, right?
UPDATE: Verizon has chimed in on the situation, simply saying that they "haven't pushed a software update to the Droid X." Back to waiting, I suppose.
