Google Voice has been getting mostly positive praise from users ever since its inception, but one of the biggest sticking points for many has been the inability to port a number into the service. Now those users have one less complaint, as Google announced today that number porting has gone live. The process will take around 24 hours to complete and set you back $20, plus any possible early termination fees that your carrier will charge after your account is canceled. Right now, porting is only available to current GV users, so you won't be able to sign up today and port your number right away. New users will be able to port a number "within the next few weeks." Check out a video explanation from El Goog down below.
While Google Voice number porting may not seem like a big deal, for those of us that swear by the service, this is a great day. Now you can port the number that you've been holding on to and giving out for years and access all of GV's features with it. The only downside is that you'll still need to sign up with a carrier to get a new number to forward to your GV number, but that's a small price to pay to be able to finally, finally port your personal number into Google. So, are any of you going to go through with the porting process?
