Yesterday we brought you a rumor that claimed that Ice Cream could be coming to cool us down some time this summer, but now it looks like one part of the rumor has changed. We've been referring to the version of Android following Honeycomb as Ice Cream for some time now, but the folks at TechCrunch have heard from Andy Rubin that it'll sport a slightly different name when it arrives: Ice Cream Sandwich. Their explanation for the new name? Google places a dessert statue outside of its HQ for each new release of Android, and an Ice Cream sculpture would be awfully tough to differentiate from a Froyo one.
The Ice Cream-Ice Cream Sandwich name change may be slight, but it definitely makes sense. I'm still not completely sure that I buy that Ice Cream Sandwich will be version 2.4 of Android, though. Luckily, it sounds like we'll only have to wait until Google I/O in May to find out for sure.
