When Apple introduced iOS 4.1, many users felt kind of burned by the fact that their particular iPhone was going to miss out on one feature or another (unless you're an iPhone 4 owner). One of the biggest issues was the fact that the iPhone 3GS wasn't getting the ability to take high dynamic range (HDR) photos even though its hardware is technically able to do so. Turns out that Apple may be providing you 3GS owners a way to take HDR photos without jailbreaking, as a new HDR icon has been spotted in the latest iOS SDK that is for non-Retina Displays. As 9to5Mac notes, Apple identifies Retina Display-compatible icons with an @2x image title, something this new icon is missing.
iOS 4.2 is going to be dropping some time in November, so that's probably our best bet for seeing HDR photography on the aging iPhone 3GS. Considering that the 3GS is capable of taking HDR photos, I'm not sure why Apple didn't include the ability with the launch of iOS 4.1, but perhaps they needed to make some more tweaks or something like that. Either way, it definitely looks like 3GS HDR is on the way in the near future. Your photos are about to get a whole lot more HDR-ified, 3GS owners. Get excited!
