The iPad is already cutting into laptop sales at Best Buy, and now it appears that Apple's tablet may begin cutting into t-shirt, greeting card, and children's toy sales, too. Target has officially confirmed that they will begin selling the iPad on October 3rd, with many reports suggesting that four different iPad models will be available for purchase. The Associated Press says that Target will offer the three different WiFi-only iPads along with "the WiFi + 3G model," perhaps meaning that the 3G-equipped iPad will only be available in one capacity. The iPad will also qualify for the retailer's five percent discount for store credit card owners (begins on Oct. 17th), which Target hopes will help attract shoppers during the holiday season.
Considering that Target is the nation's second-largest retailer, I'd say that the stores have a good shot of boosting iPad sales even further than they've already gone. The only thing I'm confused about is why Target is only carrying one 3G iPad model. Perhaps having six different iterations of the same product was going to take up too much floor space? Anyway, let's hope that some Android tablets get a similar treatment upon release, that way consumers can compare and choose whichever is right for them. After all, choice is what makes the world go 'round.
