Sony Ericsson's line of XPERIA X10 devices were often said to be great handsets that were held back by software problems, particularly the fact that they were shipped with Android 1.6 in tow. An update to Android 2.1 has been promised for the X10 lineup, but according to a leaked Sony Ericsson timeline, the X10 phones won't receive any more Android updates beyond Eclair. As can be seen in the photo above, the X10 will be receiving a substantial amount of upgrades with 2.1, including 720p video capture, five home screens, support for HTML5, and the ability to link Facebook and Twitter accounts with your Contacts. The X10 Mini, X10 Mini Pro, and X8 won't get quite as many enhancements, as the document says HTML5 support, Bluetooth 2.1, and a small change in four corner navigation is in store. Beyond Android 2.1, though, is looks like the only upgrades these handsets will see are improvements to both the Timescape and Mediascape user experiences.
It's definitely disappointing that owners of the X10 line of handsets have been stuck with a severely outdated version of Android for this long, but at least Sony Ericsson is planning to update them to Android 2.1 before ceasing the Android updates. While the X10 Mini, Mini Pro, and X8 won't be getting quite as many improvements as their larger brother, getting any major update is better than nothing. There's nothing mentioned in the doc about any potential release date for the Android 2.1 upgrades, but we've heard that they would be coming some time this month. Meanwhile, a forum member at se-world.info says that the update will hit in October or November, so your guess is as good as ours.
