It wasn't long ago that we first laid eyes on webOS 2.0, and now we wouldn't be able to stop the news from pouring in if we tried (not that we would). Today a flurry of screenshots from the webOS 2.0 beta has hit the web, showing off new launcher categories, a redesigned dialer app, default app preferences, and settings for the all-new JustType feature, among other things. Unfortunately, outside of the vague "later this year" window that we've heard in the past, we're still not any closer to learning exactly when webOS 2.0 will actually be released to the public. Come on, Palm, we need to know when to take off work to play with the new webOS!
The new screenshots of webOS 2.0 definitely showcase a lot of new functionality present in the latest upgrade to Palm's OS, and I have a feeling that the updates could definitely help boost webOS sales in the U.S. However, Palm/HP needs to push out some impressive new hardware along with the update to really compete with the likes of Android 2.2, iOS 4, BlackBerry 6, etc. Both the Pre and Pixi are seriously getting long in the tooth and, while webOS still looks like a strong platform, it's hard to commit to a device that is well over a year old at this point. Let's hope that the mysterious "Roadrunner" device makes its debut with webOS 2.0.
