It's clear that Android has grown in the last year, but it's been tough to actually measure that growth except when Google occasionally announces numbers. A recent report from Canalys, however, shows that the platform's growth in the past year has been staggering. The report states that Android sales in Q2 2010 were up a whopping 886 percent when compared to the same time last year. This puts the OS at 34 percent of the U.S. market, behind Nokia's 38 percent but ahead of RIM's 32 percent and Apple's 21.7 percent. Android wasn't the only platform to experience growth, though, with Apple up 61 percent and RIM up 41 percent. Sure, it may not be near 886 percent, but any growth is good, right?
Android, while somewhat popular on T-Mobile at the time, wasn't a major player in the smartphone world in Q2 2009. That all changed with the Motorola DROID, however, as Android was introduced to the mainstream on a high-end, QWERTY-packing device on Verizon. Google's little green robot is obviously doing well, and while the number of actual Android handsets in use may be behind Apple and RIM, 886 percent growth in sales is nothing to sneeze at.
