Mobile hotspots are a hot feature as of late, especially with the popularity of MiFi devices on carriers like Verizon and Sprint. The CDMA technology used in Verizon and Sprint's MiFis means they are useful in the U.S. and that's about it Verizon is about to change that, though, with their CDMA/GSM hybrid mobile WiFi hotspot. Leaked to Engadget, the "FiveSpot" is a "global ready 3G mobile hotspot," capable of being used just about anywhere in the world thanks to its dual CDMA/UMTS radios. Considering Verizon has been selling world phones with CDMA/GSM capabilities for a while now, this news definitely makes sense for the carrier.
A global ready MiFi-like device could definitely be a big seller for Verizon, especially since the carrier uses a wireless technology that is less than popular in the rest of the world. When it comes to the name of FiveSpot, I'm guessing it means that five users can be connected simultaneously. Most devices, including Verizon's current MiFi, support five users at once, and it makes sense that the FiveSpot would continue that trend. There's no pricing or release information for the FiveSpot just yet, but considering the finished looks of the device and and packaging, I would bet that we'll be hearing something sooner rather than later.
