If Samsung and T-Mobile were going for popularity points with this new name, they've definitely earned it, though I'm not sure it's in a good way. I was definitely surprised and got a few laughs when I heard the name, but I decided to look past the odd nature of it, and focus on the device itself to see if it's a worthy contender in the featurphone market. I've had it out of the box for about a day and I'm not too sure about the prospects of this one. Granted, all featurephones can be somewhat forgettable given the rapid succession of them in today's market, but this one could have used a little more "umph" in the quality control department. At least that's what I noticed right away.

The Samsung :) ships with a charger, 1000 mAh battery, Getting Started Guide and other documentation. It's a bit smaller than most devices measuring just four inces tall, two inches wide, and a little over half-an-inch thick. It weighs about four ounces. This is one reason why I decided right off that it would be a good fit for kids and "tweens" getting their first phone.

The first thing I noticed is that the device looks really cheap. I know, I know, it's a cheap device so of course it looks cheap, but the Pantech Link and the Samsung Reality are also "cheap" devices, but they still look nice and stylized. The Samsung :) looks like a demo unit at a store. You know, the ones that aren't real phones so the buttons are just kind of flat and plasticky and it feels hollow? Not a good thing for a device that needs to fight in order to stand out.

I haven't had much use with the interface, but it too seems a little under-designed. I think they could've added more color and styling to it. I'll have to see whether or not I can change the color theme.

So far, I'm not impressed. You could make the argument that it's just a featurephone so does it really matter? Well, it does matter when there are other featurephones out there, selling for the same price, that look and feel better. I'll run some more tests using text messaging, web browsing, and calling to see if it gets any better.
