Android fragmentation has been a hot topic recently with the platform's breakneck update schedule, and now Android's open source and compatibility program manager Dan Morrill has shared his thoughts on the nasty F-word. Morrill believes that fragmentation "is a bogeyman, a red herring, a story you tell to frighten junior developers," and that it's used to create articles to drive traffic to blogs. While this stance may be true to a certain extent, it's obvious that with the speed that Android updates are released, combined with the fact that some phones are still stuck at Android 1.5 or 1.6, something needs to be done. Andy Rubin, head of Android, recently stated that the updates are going to slow to two per year and eventually to one per year, which is good news for the Android platform and all of its users.
