I wonder how long this will go on. I wonder how long we'll care. Palm has started rolling out WebOS 1.1 to Pre owners, and the most newsworthy (if not the most important) bit of the update seems to be a fix that once again lets the phone play nicely with Apple's iTunes media management software. If you've been following the mini-drama, you know that Palm built WebOS 1.0 to sync with iTunes by "tricking" the software into thinking Pre was a generic model iPod. Apple then responded by breaking the functionality in its recent iTunes 8.2.1 update. And now Palm has responded.
Any bets on when Apple will release iTunes 8.2.2, now with "advanced iPod authentication security," aka Pre Block v2?
In the meanwhile, WebOS 1.1 brings with it a bunch of other goodies that Pre-but-not-iTunes users can also enjoy. PreCentral has an exhaustive list of documented and undocumented features for you to peruse; here are a few notables:
Got a Pre? Got the update? Tell us about it in the comments. And if you don't have the update yet, don't worry, that screengrab up there tells us it may be a few days before your Pre auto-downloads the whole thing for you. Stay patient and hope you get it before Apple kills your iTunes syncing again.
And yes, I stole Engadget Mobile's idea for using that screengrab as an image for this post. What can I say, I liked the poignancy.
