iPhone Watch: AT&T Posts Inventory Updates; Red iPhone for Holiday Season

A few notes from iPhone land (that's my fair warning to anyone tired of Apple, already, to just skip this post):

- AT&T and European carrier O2 have posted iPhone 3G inventory updates.  The updates seem to be equal part public service notice for consumers and thinly veiled angry tirade at Apple to replenish their stock, already.  A relevant snippet from AT&T's iPhone Media Kit page:

"For those customers who have ordered through direct fulfillment, and have not yet received their iPhone 3G, here's a quick update on our current inventory:

  • As of July 23, direct fulfillment customers are receiving their iPhone 3G, on average, 13 or 14 days following purchase.
  • Delivery times vary based on the specific model a customer chooses (8 GB, 16 GB white, 16 GB black).

AT&T handles direct fulfillment on a first-come, first-served basis, giving everyone an opportunity for stress-free shopping. As we receive new inventory from Apple, we are shipping it out immediately to fill customers' orders. We hope to begin re-stocking our stores as soon as we can, but first priority goes to those customers who purchased through direct fulfillment."

- Rumors are swirling around a possible release of a red iPhone 3G in time for this year's holiday shopping season.  The red iPhone would likely be a Product (RED) item, meaning that a percentage of each sale would go to The Global Fund to help women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.  Methinks this rumor is to be taken with a healthy dose of salt for the time being, no matter how cool you think a red iPhone might look.  So if you like the idea of giving some money to a worthy cause, just go ahead and do it now - don't wait for a new gadget to simultaneously feed your tech cravings and help you give a little back to the world.
