I want to give you guys an overview as to what YouTube Music Key is as you can see from the title (or maybe it’s down below). And I say YouTube Music Key but it actually extends into the Google Play Music App as it is actually for Google Play Music subscribers, which costs about $10/month give or take. And it actually includes a bunch of really neat features and perks that I wanted to show you guys on here and over there.

If we take a look at the YouTube app, first of all, when you boot up the recent update, it’ll say “Welcome to YouTube.” New awesomeness awaits, we hit next where it will say “Try a YouTube Mix” to launch an infinite playlist of music videos with unlimited skips. “Your music homepage” to find your favorite music, videos, and suggested playlists on a new tab. “Find music smarter” starts playing music or albums derived from search.

So anyway, once you get through all of that, you scroll to this little prompt, you will see the familiar YouTube app. But up at the top, we have two new categories. Well, one of them is new at least—one for home and one for music. So let’s click on Music and we will first see music that is randomly generated based on what you might have listened to before, whether that’s a song or an artist. We also have recommended songs, playlists, and a section called Play It Again, whereas music you recently listened to can play again. Pretty straightforward.

Also, what’s cool is that it syncs data from your Google Play Music account and displays your most recent activity here as well. There’s also a bunch of random YouTube genre-based playlist—Trending Videos, Top Music Videos by Genre, New & Noteworthy Playlists, Hitting the Gym Playlists, and a section called Music for Every Mood. Basically, there’s just a lot of different categories here that YouTube tries to appeal to just about every type of music listener.

Although what’s cool is that when you click on a music video, it will be a part of Music Keys so it will be ad-free. It’ll also be in the background and will also be available for offline listening meaning first of all, you can take videos offline and play videos without an internet connection by tapping on the little download icon underneath the video. When you add a video offline, you will have an option to select the quality and then it will be moved to the offline section in YouTube. And then in this section, you can see the videos or playlists made offline, which once again don’t need an internet connection. What’s also neat here is that if you go back to the video, you will see that it will continue to be played even when I’m scrolling around my phone and doing other things. It’s still playing in the background, which is a really neat feature.

If you take a look at the Google Play Music app, you will see, first of all, Music Key is present here as well. You can find a song that has a music video available and you’ll notice a little YouTube icon there where you can tap on that and it’ll start playing the music video from YouTube right from the Google Play Music app. So it’s pretty seamless and it works great.

And yeah, that is really what makes up Music Key. It’s primarily a YouTube thing that also integrates itself with Google Play Music. Basically if you use Google Play Music, Music Key just makes it even better. It’s not trying to really compete with Google Play Music or create its own music service. It’s just sort of an update that enhances the current Google music platforms—those being YouTube and Google Play Music.
