I finally have the simplistic Apple iPhone 6 Plus box. So let’s go ahead and unbox it by slicing off the plastic wrap and sliding off the top of the box. You probably noticed this is the Space Gray 16GB variant as mentioned on the outside of the box. But there it is—the large, almost phablet-sized iPhone 6 Plus looking good with its very sleek black front. Before we get too carried away though, I’m going to put it off to the side for a moment so that we can take a look at what is underneath.

First, we will find the basic Apple iPhone 6 Get Started packet with included Apple stickers. Then underneath that, we have three items—the first is the white Apple earpods. They are called earpods because they are essentially little, mini round pod-shaped buds that fit in your ear more comfortably. And as you can see, they are very nicely packaged, very simple but very elegant.

The next item is a rather simple one and that is the USB wall wart. It plugs into the walls so you can plug the next item into it, which is the proprietary Apple lighting cable; which you use to charge the brand new iPhone. And the end is reversible so you won’t have to fiddle with it every time you want to actually charge your device. But that is it. If we take a look at the Space Gray iPhone 6 Plus now and peel off that single piece of protective plastic, we’ll see a good-looking phone.

So this is the Space Gray version. The back and sides will be gray, while the front will be a very nice reflective black as opposed to the white front, gold or silver backs on the gold or silver versions. If you take a look around the iPhone 6 Plus, you’ll find the silent toggle switch and volume controls on the left hand side, the power/sleep on/off button on the right hand side above the SIM card slot. Nothing on the top and the 3.5mm headphone jack, speaker ports and lightning cable port on the bottom.

On the front of the iPhone 6 is the 1.2MP front-facing camera and ambient light sensors, which might be kind of hard to see with the black. And then the classic iPhone home button which doubles as a fingerprint Touch ID sensor is down below. And that’s really it. Flipping the iPhone 6 Plus over, we will find the protruding 8MP rear-facing camera with dual LED flash and that really nice aluminum back cover and Apple logo. It’s a bit sleek but it’s cold to the touch and feels very premium. I do really like the rounded corners. It definitely makes the huge device feel much more comfortable in the hands. Although since it’s not flat, you don’t have as much to hold on to. So once again, it’s very slippery.

But if you boot this up for the first time, we’ll see the setup and welcome page which I will skip through and setup behind the scenes. And there you go—the iPhone 6 Plus up and running with my iCloud account restored. I obviously have to reorganize a few things but as you can see, there’s definitely some more space around the icons even with the standard mode turned on. It’s going to look almost identical to the iPhone 6 but slightly more spread out. And you can now turn it sideways and use the iPhone 6 Plus in landscape mode, which is pretty neat. Besides that, iOS 8 is going to look a lot like iOS 8 regardless of what device you are on.
