Beau HD reviews the official HTC Magic Cover for the Nexus 9. The polyurethane cover attaches to the front and back of the Nexus 9 with magnets and can fold into two stand positions: the upright position for viewing and low or lying position for typing. The HTC Magic Cover supports automatic screen wakeup and sleep and has the ability to launch the camera app when the corner flap is folded down.
HTC released an official Magic Cover for the Nexus 9. This is the amethyst version, which features a superior orange color compare to other versions.
The unusual cover fastens to the Nexus 9 only through its built-in magnets. Upon purchasing, you’ll get only the cover along with your box. The cover comes in a polyurethane material. On one side of the Magic Cover is an orange color, while the other has a dark purple hue. It works by magnetically fastening on to the front of the Nexus 9 but it may also fasten on the back through its magnet.
The cover comes with little seams or creases that give it the ability to bend and fold into two stand position options—an upright position for viewing content and a low-lying position suitable for typing.
The cover supports automatic screen wake up and sleep mode once the cover is removed from its front side. You simply need to peel off the cover and the screen will turn on. When you fold it back, the screen will be put back to sleep. One of the flaps cover the camera of the Nexus 9. When this is peeled off, the camera automatically launches and it can be used with the cover.
Other than looking nice and stylish, the Magic Cover doesn’t really do much. Its magnet isn’t very strong at all and the cover often falls off after opening the device. The magnet isn’t strong enough to support the weight of the Nexus 9 on its own, something other non-magnetic covers are able to do.
As for the cover’s two positions, they work well but the magnet isn’t strong enough to provide support when touching display. It is barely strong enough to support holding up the Nexus 9 tablet on its own. HTC definitely did not consider that when touch screen is used, it adds extra force. And with this, the magnet should be able to reinforce it.
For $40, the HTC Magic Cover for the Nexus 9 is not worth it for its subpar functionality. So while the HTC Magic Cover looks good on the Nexus 9, that’s about it. There are much better functioning covers available in the market for most likely a cheaper price.
