This is the official Apple iPhone Lightning Dock compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch devices that do feature the lightning connector, of course. These are the recommended compatible devices so whether or not you want to put your iPad on here, it’s totally up to you. But this is it, the $40 accessory by Apple to hold, most likely, your iPhone. And boy oh boy, you’re going to be impressed with the unboxing. Are you ready for it?
We have to peel off this tape and lift open the flap and there we have it—the iPhone Lightning Dock and a couple pieces of paper that fell out here. So taking a look at the boring stuff first, we have the standard iPhone Lightning Dock Setup Guide which, chances are, you will not need to take a look at. We also have a warranty pamphlet which details the one-year warranty Apple has for this item. So chances are, you probably won’t need to open this guy up either but it’s here.
And then of course, we have the dock, the reason why you’re watching this video. It features a lightning connector from the top with nothing else around except for a lightning port and a headphone jack on the back. That’s about it besides the glossy plastic and the grip on the bottom. The dock, as a whole, has a nice weight to it so it’s not hollow and it’s not going to be easily slipped around on your desk each time you plug in your iPhone.
What’s special about this dock is that you can plug in speakers using the rear 3.5mm headphone jack just like you can do without the dock. And you can also make speakerphone calls as well. The lightning port is also raised up above the surface, which will effectively allow you to use this dock with your iPhone while your iPhone is in a case. Obviously it’s going to depend on the case but Apple cases are going to be totally fine with this dock and relatively thin third party cases will be just fine as well.
It does look like it’s going to be easy to possibly break or bend the lightning port here since there’s really not a lot of support at all to hold up your device besides the lightning port itself. But it’s actually pretty strong. It really doesn’t feel like it’s going to break at all unless you seriously apply a lot of downward pressure when you plug in your iPhone.
Some critics would be that I would like to have it in black or space gray to match my desk or even my space gray iPhone. But let’s be honest, that’s never going to happen. I also like the weight of it but I wish it was heavier so that I wouldn’t have to use two hands to remove the device from the dock. So not terribly major issues but worth mentioning.
But here’s the gist of it. It’s sleek, it’s simple, it’s official, and it costs $40. And the reason you can justify the price is mostly for aesthetic purposes. It’s simple—just like your iPhone and all your other Apple products. And that is worth something. I will say that there are third party docks that do cost a fraction of the price so maybe shop around to see what looks good on you before you go out and buy this one. I wouldn’t say that this one is overpriced but it’s not exactly cheap. It’s a pretty fair price for an official Apple accessory.
