Earlier this month, NVIDIA officially took the wraps off of its new SHIELD TV (2017). Now NVIDIA has some newness for owners of the previous SHIELD TV.
NVIDIA has announced the SHIELD Experience Upgrade 5.0 for the SHIELD TV (2015). The update includes a bump to Android 7.0 Nougat, which brings with it a Recent Apps page that you can access by double-pressing the home button, picture-in-picture support, and a new settings menu.
There are lots of other goodies packed inside this update. For example, there’s Amazon Video with 4K HDR support, just like you’ll find on the new SHIELD TV (2017). Speaking of 4K HDR, this update also enables 4K HDR support for NVIDIA GameStream.
NVIDIA is also throwing in an NVIDIA Games App with this update, which replaces the SHILED Hub app and helps you find new games to play. There are new games, too, as well as a Nest app for watching your Nest Cams and new NFL, Twitter, Comedy Central, Vimeo, and Viki apps.
Rounding out this update’s new features is Play/Pause functionality by double-tapping the volume slider on the SHIELD remote; the ability to write to attached USB or SD card storage; 4.1, 6.1, and 8.1 speaker configuration for Plex; and cast support for HBO Go.
This looks like a really nice update for SHIELD TV (2015) owners, and it could make some of those people decide to stick with their current SHIELD TV instead of upgrading to the new model. Not only are you getting bumped up to Nougat, but there are significant new features for both watching video and for playing games.
If you’ve got an NVIDIA SHIELD TV (2015), keep an eye out for this SHIELD Experience Upgrade 5.0 update in the coming days.
