The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 disaster is one of the biggest mobile stories of 2016, and many folks are still wondering what caused all of those phones to overheat. Samsung has said that it’s investigating the matter, and today details of that investigation may have leaked.
Samsung has identified the battery as the main reason that several Galaxy Note 7 phones overheated and caught fire last year, says a source speaking to Reuters. The tipster added that Samsung was able to recreate the fires and that the cause couldn’t be explained by hardware design or software.
No other details on the report were given, but the source of this report did say that Samsung will officially announce the results of its investigation on January 23.
It’s also said that Samsung is planning to take new measures to avoid a repeat of this Note 7 fiasco.
As we continue to wait for the results of Samsung’s investigation into the overheating Note 7, an independent group suggested that the issue was with the design of the phone. Specifically, they say that Samsung didn’t give the battery enough room to swell as it charged and discharged, and that the clearances around the battery were too slim.
Samsung has been working to recall all of the Note 7s in customers hands, going so far as to disable the phone’s ability to charge in the US. The company recently said that more than 96 percent of Note 7 phones in the US had been returned.
