Ah, selection. When it comes to Android it’s still one of the platform’s strongest selling points. That probably hasn’t always been the case, though. There used to be too many phones, not a lot of them very good, and some manufacturers flooded the market with so many options it was honestly hard to keep track some years.

Those companies have, thankfully, slowed down, and, perhaps as a result, the flood of smartphones has eventually calmed to something much more manageable. Sure, some companies still try to sneak in a new handset here and there, but for the most part the devices that deserve to get attention, from mid-range to the flagship models, get that attention and then some.

There have been plenty of strong Android-based smartphone released in 2015. Now that the year is wrapping up, I thought I’d hear from you and see what you consider to be your favorite handset of the year.

I thought my favorite phone of 2015 was going to be HTC’s M9, but that was before they launched it. Based on the direction the manufacturer was going, with the right moves seemingly made from the M7 to the M8 in some key aspects, I figured the M9 was going to take the cake without much of a fight. But then it launched and my time with the smartphone was overall underwhelming.

I wasn’t expecting to be surprised by Samsung in 2015 at all. Sure, the Rumor Mill had been suggesting for some time that the company would be taking a different design tactic with the 2015 flagship, but those rumors had been swirling for quite some time. Everything’s eventual, though, and Samsung came through with a truly high-end design, even though it also cut some features that long-standing fans were sad to see get the boot.

And then there’s Motorola with its latest X-branded device, which was a solid device in the year that saw some noteworthy competitors. Motorola has, by all accounts, continued to harness that momentum they picked up with the original Moto X and instilled it, and more, into their new device. The results are fantastic, and with Moto Maker it’s truly a standout.

I liked LG’s G3 well enough, but there was more about it that I didn’t like. So color me surprised when the G4 shows up and completely takes me by surprise. This is going to sound strange, but the only reason that I didn’t keep the phone is because it wasn’t running iOS. Everything else about it I loved, from the construction, the camera, the speed, and even the software. Sure, LG still has some work to do, but it’s getting there.

So yeah, the lack of iOS was the reason I didn’t keep it. But then why isn’t the iPhone 6s my favorite phone of the year, since it is the phone I’m using as a daily driver? I’m rooted in the iOS App Store at this point, I prefer the apps there in many cases, and it’s simply what I prefer on a daily basis. Plus, Live Photos are pretty great. However, the phone itself isn’t my favorite. I hate the antenna bands and it’s too thin for the sake of thinness. If I could have the LG G4 with iOS 9, I’d be a happy camper.
