The Huawei Watch is notable for a lot of reasons, like its full circle, no-flat-tire design and its stainless steel body. It also has one feature that most other watches lack: a speaker. Most Huawei Watch wearers are still waiting for a software update to enable that speaker, but at least one person already has it working.
Reddit user ThirdTimeCaller says that they received an over the air software update on their Huawei Watch last night. After installing it this morning, the Watch was left on Android Wear version 1.4.0.2496323 and Android 6.0.1. What’s interesting about the update is that it has enabled the Huawei Watch’s speaker. ThirdTimeCaller reports that they can set a ringtone for calls and cal also make phone calls from the watch itself.
Google has said that it plans on implementing speaker features into Android Wear with Audio Feedback, which will let your watch read the time and date to you and also enable you to use the “Ok Google” hotword to make calls and send messages. Unfortunately, the Huawei Watch is pretty much the only Android Wear watch currently out there that’s equipped with a speaker (the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE has one, too, but it doesn’t look like that watch will be coming out). The other bit of bad news is that it’s unclear when this update will actually roll out to everyone. The speaker features appear to be working in this test build, though, and so that’s something for Huawei Watch owners to get excited about.
