AT&T this morning became the second major carrier to share its first quarter 2012 earnings report. The carrier reports that it gained 726,000 subscribers in Q1, bringing it to 103.9 million total customers. Of that 726,000, there were 187,000 postpaid adds, 125,000 prepaid, 230,000 connected devices and 184,000 reseller additions. Smartphone sales for the first quarter set an AT&T record, with the carrier moving 5.5 million smartphones in Q1. AT&T says that smartphones made up more than 78 percent of postpaid devices sales, and at the end of the quarter, 59.3 percent (41.2 million) postpaid subs had smartphones. Around 61 percent (25 million) of the postpaid smartphone users are on tiered data plans. AT&T also said that it activated 4.3 million iPhones in the quarter, 21 percent of which were new to AT&T. Sales of devices like tablets, tethering plans and hotspots reached 460,000 (240,000 were tablets), bringing AT&T to a total of 5.8 million.
When it comes to financial numbers, saw year over growth in its wireless revenues and income. AT&T's total wireless revenues grew 5.4 percent year over year, finishing at $16.1 billion for Q1. Wireless operating revenues for the quarter came in at $11.7 billion, giving AT&T a wireless operating income of $4.4 billion, which is an 11.3 percent increase from the same time last year.
In all, it looks like AT&T had itself a fairly nice start to 2012. It managed to move quite a few smartphones, and it's interesting to hear that nearly 60 percent of AT&T's postpaid subscribers are rocking smartphones, something that I'm sure AT&T is happy to have happening. If you're in the mood to for some hard financial figures with your breakfast, you can find AT&T's full report at the source link below. The carrier will also be holding a conference call this morning that we'll be listening in on, and we'll be sure to share any interesting tidbits that get shared during the call.
