Today's the day that Verizon's mobile 5G network goes live.
Verizon has confirmed that its 5G network is now live in Chicago and Minneapolis. We knew that Verizon would be launching its mobile 5G this month, but the launch is happening one week ahead of schedule. To start, Verizon customers can expect to see typical download speeds of 450Mbps, peak speeds of nearly 1Gbps, and latency below 30 seconds.
Folks in Chicago can find Verizon 5G in The Loop, specifically areas of the West Loop and South Loop and around spots like Union Station, Willis Tower, The Art Institute of Chicago, Millennium Park, and The Chicago Theatre. Verizon 5G will also be available throughout The Gold Coast, Old Town, River North, and around the Verizon store on The Magnificent Mile.
Meanwhile, you Minneapolis residents will find Verizon 5G in the Downtown area, including Downtown West, Downtown East, and near landmarks like the Minneapolis Convention Center, the Minneapolis Central Library, the Mill City Museum, Target Center and First Avenue Venues, The Commons, and in and around U.S. Bank Stadium. Verizon 5G is also available in areas of Elliot Park and in the Verizon store at Mall of America.
Verizon says that it'll roll out 5G to more than 30 cities in 2019, so we should see more locations announced soon.
Of course, you'll need a 5G smartphone to get onto Verizon's 5G network. The Moto Z3 is now being updated to Android Pie and it's also getting support for the 5G Moto Mod. Verizon is selling that 5G Moto Mod for $199.99.
Verizon's 5G Unlimited service will cost $10 per month on top of a Go Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited, or Above Unlimited plan. To celebrate the launch of its mobile 5G network, though, Verizon is giving customers their first three months of 5G data for free.
