"Truth in Wireless" no longer their motto

Posted on: July 17th, 2007 by Mark G

The good: The best thing I can say about Suncom is that their service is crappyThe bad: at least 50% of all phone calls fail to connect or drop, regardless of location. rude and uncooperative customer service.Summary: Ever seen their recent ads to add a line for $10? Not without a new two year contract. What about replacing a phone? Sorry -- two more years. Adding minutes? Add two years. What about an "implied warranty of fitness for use" i.e., a cell phone should actually be able to make and receive phone calls? Sorry -- "It must be where you live... drive... too many trees... your phone may be broken... etc. etc. Nothing but excuses. I've called to complain, but never any action or even apologies.I can't wait till it's over. The absolute worst cell phone company -- not a very high bar to begin with.

Warning to anyone considering SUNCOM

Posted on: June 25th, 2007 by Michelle Mendoza

The good: partners with AT&TThe bad: The entire company is a conSummary: I've never had a worse experience with any company I've ever done business with. I first signed on with the company where I lived in SC and everything was fine for the first few years. I had an automatic withdrawal system set up with them and ?the unplan?. When I moved to NC, I went to the original store changed my plan?s location there but because of some sort of ?conflict,? with their computer system caused withdrawals from my account to double. I didn?t notice it until the 2nd month and I went to the new store where they explained to me that I should have changed my plan where I originally started (even though I had) but they fixed the problem. Except ? they didn?t fix it nor did they refund the money they had withdrawn. I found this out next month when same thing happened causing several checks to bounce which cost me in all over $1,500. I called and called and went to the store several times but no one would help me try to figure out what the problem was. Finally, I called and refused to hang up until I talked to the supervisor?s supervisor who ?looked into it? (while I waited on the phone b/c I wasn?t about to wait for them to call me back). Finally, she realized that the computer system in SC wasn?t programmed the same as the one in the area of NC I was in because they had been going through a merger with AT&T at that time. She apologized for the company profusely and issued a refund of the amount I overpaid and offered me one month free for the 2 lines I had. I wouldn?t do it but she said that because I?d been such a loyal customer for years she offered me 2 free phones worth over $400 and a 10% discount on the cost of the service plan (2 years). I decided to give them another chance. But the very next month, I got charged $160 for using the internet on my new phone. It seem the new plan didn?t include that, even though the brochure that arrive with the phones offered them for $5 extra per month. I asked to speak to the same supervisor to see why the service hadn?t been included (since I specifically asked that the new phones I was getting have internet service). But she was on vacation and no one else knew what was going on! I asked the customer service rep to speak to someone else who could help me and she actually hung up on me. After calling back, I finally got up someone who was able to reduce the charge to about $80 (for a service that cost $5 to add to your plan). If you are considering Suncom, I advise you to think again b/c they don?t get it.

Terrible Service

Posted on: June 20th, 2007 by Anonymous

The good: InexpensiveThe bad: Dropped calls, rude customer serviceSummary: I would not reccomend Suncom to anybody because of their terrible phone and customer service. My mother's phone service just stopped working from her home (even outside) after she switched over from ATT. She had already signed the two year contract. They basically said pay the 200 dollar cancellation charge or pay for the full two years (of no-service). They said they would reduce the fee to 75 dollars if she agreed right there and then on the phone, and that she should be grateful for how generous it was of them to offer that! Unbelieveable.

On a positive note...

The good: Affordable, Un-Plan, 300 Roaming Minutes per Month, Good selection of phones and accessories. The bad: Long waiting times during the day for customer service, but who doesn't have that?Summary: I really have nothing but good things to say about my experience with SunCom. I've been a customer for just under four years now. The UN-Plan is great. I will have a dropped call from time to time (as you will with any cell provider), but that's such a small issue when I pay only sixty bucks a month for unlimited minutes - night or day, seven days a week. I have three brothers, six sisters and sixteen nieces and nephews - so not only can I afford to keep in touch with all of them, I can also visit them anywhere in the country and afford to maintain contact at home with my included 300 roaming minutes. Some other charges do apply for unlimited text messages and internet access, but you can still manage all of these options for well under $100 a month.

Stay Away

Posted on: April 30th, 2007 by Josh T

The good: Not much. The bad: Changing plans, customer service, reception, phone quality.Summary: I came back from an Iraq deployment and decided to try out Sumcom. They had great rates and a good local plan. After the first few months is when the issues started. First they gave me a crappy phone that had known technical problems and they left that part out when I bought it. It wouldn't download from the internet, but they would still charge me when I tried. Technical support was worthless and they wouldn't take the charges off the bill. Then when I wanted to change my plan they told me that I had to sign a new contract for 2 more years. (I think not). The kicker was when I had to move to a new area where they had no service, they told me that when I got the contract over a year ago that I "should have thought about that before signing". Coverage is not that great, phones are poor quality, network is often busy, customer service is a joke. My opinion is to stay as far from this company as possible. I am paying the fee just to get out.

Why I'm dropping SunCom

Posted on: April 17th, 2007 by Lowell Wilkes

The good: Affordable (unless you leave your home state), consistent billingThe bad: Customer Service, dropped calls, inability to access the network, delayed voice mail and messages, roaming feesSummary: I've been with SunCom over four years now. Although I like the idea of having unlimited minutes, which is why I went with SunCom in the first place, their plan has changed and you now have to purchase a special feature if you're going to use their service out of your home state or you'll pay roaming fees. Service over the past couple of years has steadily declined. Way, way too often, I can not access the service and get a "SOS ONLY" banner on the phone. No one at SunCom can explain this to me. The clerk at the Greenville, NC store told me the problem is either with my phone or I am not in range of a tower. I explained that if it were a problem with the phone, it should happen all the time, not intermitently. I've replaced the phone twice in the past year and the same thing happens. And as far as the tower goes, I was standing in his store and showed him the "SOS ONLY". He again told me it was the phone. That was my deciding factor to drop SunCom. Voice mail and messages are consistently late in coming. That cost me a substantial contract, and is another reason I'm dropping SunCom.SunCom has called several times and offered me reduced rates and a new phone, etc. There's just not enough they can offer me to keep my business.

Dissatified customer

Posted on: March 31st, 2007 by joanne smith

The good: the un-planThe bad: bad customer service they are not straight-up with details just want to sellSummary: I only been with suncom about 5 months and I wish I never went with them. Customer service and the store in my area fell to tell me that if I wanted to use the internet there would be roaming if not within a tower. So I understood and purchase an data plan for myself and my son. Well the bill for that month jump up to 120 to 2000 for roaming charges. Of course I was furious and call upon customer service and they tried to blame my son. (of course I know how teenagers are that's why I pick the un-plan) but come on within one month 2000 ridiculious. So going back and forth with them of course they cut all 3 lines that I had off and is still being charge excessively and have not had services with them in 2 years, remind you I been with the company only 5 months. I feel like I really been scam (and should not have to pay this outrageous bill)to the fullest and advise anyone to please do your research first because suncom is not straight up. If they were I would not be bother with this review. (yes my son and I talk about this and at the time he did not have the time to be on the internet because he was in high school and also had another carrier before suncom and had no trouble with internet service, roaming, or whatever) Suncom is indeed a scam.

Suncom Service is the worst!

Posted on: March 18th, 2007 by Anonymous

The good: I have an older plan that fits my needsThe bad: They have no idea what service is. Drop Calls! The do not stand behind any product they sell Summary: Never really had a problem and was forced to buy new phones, due to network changes, then the phones they sold us (suggested by the manager as the best phone they had) has been nothing but problems. Thier stock answer is thats not our problem you need to send it back to the maker of the phone. Its not thier problem. The manager in the Southern Pines store has been rude to me and my wife. They are great to sign up, but from that point on you are on your own and they do not care. The regional manager even admitted he did like thier policies but that is all they could do.

The good: Cheap BUT YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!!The bad: NO SERVICE unless you are in Columbia, SC Summary: I got three phones for my kids at X-Mas. I thought i was getting a good deal. When I gave the phones to them they wouldnt pick up service anywhere. When I got the phones i was miss led on everything. I called Suncom and they told me it was too late i was stuck for two years during the contract. Now i have three phones that no one can use. They cant text or send pics or anything. Trust me if its to good to be true dont do it. Take my advice and pay more for another type plan because Suncom STINKS!!!! And I cant wait for this to be over.
