Google suffered a widespread outage today that took out many of its services, including Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, and Google Stadia. Android users were unable to download new apps from the Play Store because of the outage, too, and smart home devices powered by Google Assistant had problems as well.
Even some non-Google products were affected by today's outage. Pokemon Go uses Google services, and many users were unable to log in to the game earlier today.
The issues began appearing at around 4:00 am PT / 7:00 am ET this morning. Most services appear to be coming back online now, and Down Detector shows that reports of issues with Google services have subsided.
Google hast not given an official explanation about what caused today's outage. The company did acknowledge that something was wrong with Gmail on its Google Workspace Status Dashboard, saying, "We're aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a majority of users. The affected users are unable to access Gmail."
That support page now says that the problem with Gmail "should be resolved for the vast majority of affected users."
