Today Apple unleashed some new firmware for the AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro, and owners of the Pro earbuds appear to be getting a couple new features with the update.
Firmware 3A283 is now rolling out to both the second generation AirPods and the AirPods Pro (via MacRumors). It's been a while since either model got an update, with the AirPods 2 last getting firmware 2D15 in May while the AirPods Pro got an update to 2D15 in June.
Unlike iOS and watchOS updates, you can't manually pull an AirPods update. The best way to try and get the new update on your AirPods is to put them in their case, connect them to a charger, and Pair them to an iPhone or iPad.
You can see what firmware your AirPods or AirPods Pro are currently on by connecting them to your iPhone or iPad and then selecting Settings > General > About > AirPods.
AirPods Pro owners who already have the 3A283 firmware installed say it brings a couple new features that Apple previously announced for iOS 14. These include Spatial Audio, which uses dynamic head tracking to put sounds anywhere in space when you're watching a TV show or movie, giving you a more immersive experience (via MacRumors).
The update also enables automatic switching for both the AirPods and AirPods Pro. This feature enables your AirPods to switch between Apple devices connected to your iCloud account when it detects audio from a device and you're actively using it.
Both spatial audio and automatic switching require iOS 14, so unless you're on one of the beta releases, you won't see these new features quite yet.
