We've seen phone makers use several different methods to include a front-facing camera while also offering an edge-to-edge display, including notches, hole-punches, and pop-ups. And now the first under-display camera is coming.
ZTE touts that its Axon 20 5G will be the first 5G smartphone with an under-display camera. The phone will be announced at an event in China on September 1.
ZTE isn't saying much else about its upcoming Axon 20 5G, but leaks say that it could include a 6.92-inch 2460x1080 OLED display, up to 12GB of RAM, a 4120mAh battery, and four rear cameras that include 64MP, 8MP, and two 2MP cams. The selfie camera under the display is expected to be a 32MP shooter.
We saw Oppo and Xiaomi starting to show off under-display cameras last year, but ZTE is touting that its Axon 20 5G will be the first mass-produced phone to feature the under-display camera tech.
An under-display camera is appealing because you aren't losing screen real estate to a notch or hole-punch, and you also don't have an extra mechanical part like you would with a pop-up camera. Plus, it's just kind of cool to think that there's a fully functional camera underneath your screen.
