Facebook's New Product Experimentation team is on a roll lately. After launching the Tuned app for couples last month and then the CatchUp app for calling loved ones just this week, the NPE team has now debuted another experimental new app.
Collab is an app that aims to make it easy for people to create music. When you make a Collab, you're putting together three independent videos that are playing in sync to create a tune.
With the app, you can add your own recording or swipe to discover existing bits of music to complete a song that you're working on. Once you've uploaded your Collab video, other people using the app can mix and match your segments with their own to create new music. Each person in a Collab will get credit for their contribution. You can also share your Collab videos to other platforms.
Collab is currently only available on iOS, and there's no word on when an Android version might launch (via Engadget). If you've got an iOS device and want to give Collab a try, you can sign up for the waitlist here.
This app could be a fun way to create music in normal times, letting you take other creations people have made and matching them up with your own to create something new even if they're in a completely different part of the world. But with many people staying home due to the coronavirus pandemic, there may be even more interest in Collab from people seeking a creative outlet.
