Apple today announced WWDC 2020, but the event is going to be a bit different than in previous years.

Apple says that the 2020 edition of its Worldwide Developers Conference will take place in June and that it will have an "entirely new online format".

WWDC is Apple's yearly developer event that normally sees thousands of developers converge on California to learn about iOS, watchOS, macOS, and tvOS, interact with Apple engineers, and get help with developing apps. This year, though, the even is moving entirely online due to the coronavirus.

"The current health situation has required that we create a new WWDC 2020 format that delivers a full program with an online keynote and sessions, offering a great learning experience for our entire developer community, all around the world. We will be sharing all of the details in the weeks ahead," explained Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

Apple also announced today that it will commit $1 million to local San Jose organizations to offset the revenue loss as a result of WWDC 2020's online format. The past few WWDC events have been held in San Jose, bringing in thousands of visitors to spend their money at local businesses. Those people won't be in San Jose this year, though, and so Apple is helping to offset the business that those shops won't be getting.

While WWDC is developer-focused, Apple does typically make some announcements at the conference that are of interest to us non-developers, too. We normally get an early look at the next major releases of iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS and some of the new features they'll bring, for example.

Since WWDC 2020 will have an "entirely new online format", no one knows exactly how Apple is going to handle things this time around. We definitely could still get some new announcements related to iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS, whether that's in the form of a prepared video or something else, so WWDC 2020 is still worth looking forward to if you're interested in Apple.
