Remember that Vine successor that we first heard about way back in 2017? It's been a while since we've heard anything about it, but the service is now live.
Byte is the name of the new service from Dom Hoffman, one of the co-founders of Vine. Just like Vine, Byte lets you create 6-second looping videos that you can share with the community. Byte is available on iPhone and Android.
When you first open the app, you're asked to sign in with an Apple or Google account. You can then choose a username and avatar and then get to creating.
The camera interface is pretty simple, giving you a white record button at the bottom of the screen that you can press and hold to record video. A timeline at the top of the screen will fill as you record. You also have the option of importing a video that you already have in your phone's gallery.
There's also a main feed where you can see Byte videos created by other users. If you find a video that you really like, you can Rebyte it to your followers or share it using another service. You can also heart a video and leave a comment.
Vine was a hugely popular social network, with users getting creative with the looping 6-second video format. The service was killed off in 2016, though. Now we've got a replacement that offers a similar 6-second looping video format, and while there are other popular video services out there, the love that a lot of people had for Vine could help Byte to get some traction.
