OnePlus has already begun teasing features for the OnePlus 8.
OnePlus today confirmed that it's working on a 120Hz Fluid Display. The company is teaming up with Samsung Display on the panel, teasing that it will be an AMOLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate, a peak brightness of more than 1000 nits, and a 240Hz touch sampling rate for more responsive touch.
Another feature of the next OnePlus screen is MEMC technology. Because most video content is shot in 24fps or 30fps, with a small amount shot in 60fps, OnePlus wil be using MEMC for smoother video playback on its next display. Also used in high-end TVs, MEMC uses real-time algorithmic adjustments to insert additional frames into a video so that it can be played at 60fps or 120fps.
Finally, the display also includes support for 10-bit color, offering 1,024 shades of each primary color and 1.07 billion possible colors. That enables it to offer fuller, more natural gradients when showing content.
OnePlus touts that its new display is "the best you'll lay eyes on in 2020". That suggests that we'll see it on the OnePlus 8 series that'll be unveiled later this year.
The OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7T both featured 90Hz refresh rates, and so the jump to a 120Hz display is a big upgrade for the OnePlus 8. And while the OP8 won't be the first smartphone with a 120Hz screen — gaming phones like the ASUS ROG Phone II and Razer Phone 2 launched with that feature in the past year or two — it's good to see the 120Hz refresh rate spreading to more phones.
