Following yesterday's confirmation that the Snapdragon 865 is indeed a real thing, Qualcomm today spilled more details about exactly what it can do.

The Snapdragon 865 boasts a Qualcomm Kryo 585 octa-core CPU that offers up to 25% better performance compared to last year's Snapdragon 855. The Adreno 650 GPU in the SD865 is faster, too, boasting a 25% performance improvement compared to previous generation models.

Another important feature of the Snapdragon 865 is the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System. It offers peak speeds of 7.5Gbps and includes support for all key regions and bands including mmWave and sub-6 in both TDD and FDD flavors. It's also compatible with NSA and SA modes as well as Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, global 5G roaming, and multiple SIMs.

Qualcomm has also placed a focus on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth performance with the Snapdragon 865. There's support for Wi-Fi 6 and speeds approaching 1.8Gbps and Qualcomm apX Voice, which makes the SD865 the first mobile platform to support Super Wide Band voice over Bluetooth for better audio.

The ISP (image signal processor) in the Snapdragon 865 operates at up to 2 gigapixels per second and supports capturing 8K video and 960fps slow-mo video as well as 200MP photos. Dolby Vision for video helps you capture HDR video, and using the new 5th gen Qualcomm AI Engine, the Snapdragon 865's ISP can identify backgrounds, people, and objects.

Speaking of Qualcomm's AI Engine, the company says that the Snapdragon 865 offers features like real-time translations using AI for both text and speech. Qualcomm is also making improvements to voice detection to help your device's digital assistant hear you clearly.

And then there are gaming improvements. Qualcomm says that Adreno Updateable GPU Drivers allow for graphics driver updates to be downloaded from an app store. Support for 144Hz display refresh rate is included in the Snapdragon 865 as well as a feature called Game Color Plus that can boost color saturation and local tone mapping. A new feature called Desktop Forward Rendering will enable game developers to bring desktop-quality lighting and post-processing effects to mobile games, too.

Qualcomm says that devices powered by the Snapdragon 865 will begin appearing in the first quarter of 2020.
