Facebook wants to perform some market research, and it's willing to pay you for your help.
Facebook Viewpoints is a new app for Android and iOS. With it, Facebook will ask you questions on various topics and reward you with points. When you reach a certain amount of points, you'll receive a payment that'll be sent directly to your PayPal account.
The first survey launched in Facebook Viewpoints is a Well-Being Survey. Facebook explains that it wants to "better understand how the use of social media like Facebook can impact people's well-being." The company says it'll use the info it gathers from this survey to "build better products that aim to limit the negative impacts of social media and enhance the benefits."
To sign up for Facebook Viewpoints, you'll need to share info like your name, email address, country of residence, date of birth, and gender. You may also need to share your location to confirm that you qualify for certain surveys. Facebook pledges that it will tell you how your information will be used before you begin a survey and that it won't sell your information from this app to third-parties. Your info won't be shared on Facebook or other accounts without your permission. Finally, you must be 18 to use the new app.
Facebook was the subject of controversy earlier this year when it was revealed that the company had been secretly paying people to download a research app so that it could gather data about them. And before that in 2018, Facebook had a VPN app named Onavo kicked out of the App Store for its data collection policies. Now it seems that Facebook is trying to be more straightforward and clear about what it's doing. So if you could use a few extra bucks and don't mind answering surveys for Facebook, you can download the Viewpoints app now.
