I’m a firm believer that some products should just stick to a balanced refresh cycle. That doesn’t necessarily mean we need a new gadget every year, though. In fact, I think a lot of people would be pretty happy if Apple, Samsung, Google, and other companies released phones every two years, rather than the typical one. But companies have their own data to go on, which means they may have plenty of reasons why, say, $150 wireless headphones need to be overshadowed by a pair of $249 alternatives.

Now, to be fair, that’s not really what’s going on here. But I wouldn’t blame someone if they were pretty upset with Apple today.

Just in case you missed it: AirPods Pro are now official. They bring with them IPX4-rated water- and sweat-resistance. They offer Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode. They have been redesigned to boast silicone tips to fit better in the ear. And they really do sound pretty impressive with all the features baked in.

And, as I mentioned above, they cost $249.

That’s $100 or more compared to the standard AirPods you can walk into a store and buy right now. But considering how much technology is baked into the AirPods Pro the price difference makes sense. But this is the second pair of AirPods that Apple has launched this year. The AirPods with slightly better battery life while talking on the phone —and a wireless charging case— went on sale in April of this year. Now, six months later there is an even more expensive option.

I know four people who plan on getting the AirPods Pro, three of which plan on selling their AirPods to help get some cash for the new model. (Buying used headphones doesn’t sound great to me, but I know it happens.) As for me? I’m on the fence, so to speak. I’m one of those people who bought the AirPods with a wireless charging case back in April, a decision I justified after having the original AirPods because battery life was starting to get a little less-than-desirable.

I can’t say that now, though. While I typically use my AirPods every day the battery life is still fine, and as much as I want all that extra technology baked into my headphones I don’t know that I’m willing to fork over the money Apple demands. At least, not right now. That could change by the time the holidays roll around later this year (and then I’m sure we’ll get even newer AirPods in April again, just because).
