Google Fi has always used multiple wireless networks to give you the best coverage, and it currently has access to the T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular networks. Phones on Fi can switch between these networks to get you the best coverage, but Google today announced that the Pixel 4 can do this better than previous Fi phones.
The Pixel 4 includes Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) hardware that allows the phone to connect to two networks at once and making them both available for use right away. It can do this because the Pixel 4 has both a physical SIM card slot and eSIM support.
With dual connect technology, the Pixel 4 can more seamlessly switch you to a better network when it detects that one is available. This means that, for example, if you're watching a video and the Pixel 4 switches you to a better network, you won't notice any delays or pauses in your video.
Pixel 4 owners who bought their phone from Google Fi or the Google Store will get this dual connect technology over the next few weeks. Google plans to expand the feature to more Designed for Fi devices in the future.
