Google is working on a new feature for Pixel phones to help you in case you get into a car crash.
This week, Google accidentally rolled out an app called Personal Safety, and it included a car crash detection feature that can call 911 if you get into a crash. The folks at XDA-Developers got the app as an update to the Emergency Information app on a Pixel 2 XL that was tweaked to be more like a Pixel 4. The update didn't roll out widely, though, so it's possible that Personal Safety will debut on the Pixel 4.
With the Personal Safety app, your phone can detect when you're in a car crash and then vibrate and play a loud warning tone. You can press an "I'm OK" button or a "911" button, but if you don't respond, the phone will automatically call 911.
The app can also display medical info and emergency contacts when your phone is locked to help first responders. And with emergency sharing, you can quickly share a short message and your current location with all of your emergency contacts.
Most smartphones have a way for you to quickly place an emergency call, but that could be difficult to do if you're in a car crash and injured. Google's Personal Safety app aims to get you emergency help and contact your loved ones even if you are injured and unable to call 911 after a car crash. It's good that Google is also including an "I'm OK" button if you're in a minor crash and don't necessarily need emergency services.
