HMD Global is one of the better Android device makers when it comes to software updates, pushing regular security patches to its Nokia phones. Now HMD has committed to continue updating its first wave of Nokia handsets.
HMD Global will offer quarterly security updates for the Nokia 8, Nokia 6 (shown above), Nokia 5, and Nokia 3, going beyond the two years of regular security updates that the phones were originally promised.
"As the two-year period draws to a close for these smartphones, we remain committed to delivering the best and most secure experiences," HMD said in its announcement. "So, what does it mean? Once we reach 2 years from the time last market launched these smartphones (and following Operator and regional approvals), the Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and the Nokia 3 will be able to receive quarterly security patch updates right through to the end of the 3rd year."
The Nokia 3 will receive quarterly security updates from September 2019 through September 2020. The Nokia 8, Nokia 6, and Nokia 5 will all get quarterly security patches from October 2019 through October 2020.
HMD does warn that the Nokia 6 Amazon model sold in the U.S. and India will stop getting security patches in October 2019. Additionally, the Nokia 2's security patch support will conclude in November 2019.
