We've seen dark mode spreading quite a bit lately, with Google adding it to several of its Android apps and baking it into Android Q as well, and Apple is adding a dark mode into iOS 13, too. Now it looks like another major app could get a dark mode soon.
Facebook appears to be working on a dark mode for its app. Jane Manchun Wong was digging in the code for Facebook's Android app and found that the company has started work on a dark mode.
In a screenshot, we can see that much of the background of the app is now dark. The current Facebook app is largely white, so this dark mode is quite a change.
The feature is in early stages right now and only parts of the Facebook app are working in dark mode, so it could be a little while before we see Facebook officially launch dark mode for its apps.
Facebook hasn't made any official announcements about a dark mode, but it's not a huge surprise to hear that a dark mode for the Facebook app is in the works. Not only does Facebook Messenger already have a dark mode, but both Google and Apple are working on system-wide dark modes for the next major Android and iOS updates. Users who enable these dark modes could get frustrated when they're using dark mode apps and then launch Facebook and see a bright white UI, so a dark mode for the Facebook app would be a nice addition.
