August 2019 Android security patch updates now rolling out to Google Pixels, Essential Phone

New month, new Android security updates.

The August 2019 Android security updates are now rolling out to Google's Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel, and Pixel XL. The updates are going out over the air, so you should see your phone update soon. Google is also offering factory images and OTA images if you'd prefer to go that route.

Essential is continuing its streak of offering new security patches the same day as Google, as the Essential Phone is now getting the August 2019 Android security update, too.

Included with the 2019-08-01 security patches are fixes for vulnerabilities related to the Android runtime, framework, media framework, and system. The 2019-08-05 security patch level adds fixes for the media framework, Broadcom components, Qualcomm components, and Qualcomm closed source components.

Google also notes that there are some Pixel-specific patches included in the August 2019 update. This includes fixes for Qualcomm components as well as some functional patches, like saved Wi-Fi network configuration improvements and Wi-Fi Captive Portal Login stability improvements for all Pixel phones. Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL owners can look forward to sleep mode improvements, too.
