Amazon's Echo family of smart speakers looks set to grow again.
Amazon is planning a high-end Echo speaker with improved sound to rival the Sonos One, Apple's HomePod, and Google's Home Max. The device is cylindrical like Amazon's other Echo speakers, says Bloomberg, but this new Echo is wider than the current model so that it can fit in more parts.
The device is said to include at least four tweeters, up from the one in the Echo Plus. To compare, the Google Home Max has two tweeters, the Sonos One has one, and the Apple HomePod has seven.
Other than that, details on this premium Echo speaker are light. Today's report does say that Amazon is planning to release the device next year.
Lots of people are probably content with the sound on the standard Echo for a speaker that they can just shout at and have music come out of, but there are some folks who care more about sound quality and want a higher-end device before getting a smart speaker. Amazon is likely targeting them with this new Echo. The company does sell its Echo Plus with improved sound, but the device that today's report is focused on sounds like it'd be even higher end.
