The Samsung Galaxy Fold is no longer the only foldable phone that's getting delayed.

Huawei is delaying the Mate X launch. The foldable was supposed to arrive in mid-2019, possibly in June, but now Huawei says that the Mate X will be released in September.

A Huawei spokesperson has told CNBC that the reason for the delay is because Huawei is being more "cautious" after Samsung Galaxy Fold review units broke back in April. "We don't want to launch a product to destroy our reputation," the spokesperson said. Huawei is also using the time to do extra testing with carriers and helping developers make sure their apps work with the Mate X's foldable screen.

While Huawei is facing a ban that prevents U.S. companies from selling parts, software, and other tech to it, Huawei is "confident" that it will be able to release the Mate X to consumers. And because it was introduced before the U.S. ban, the Mate X will run Android and not a custom Huawei OS or some other software.

The Huawei Mate X has a slightly different design that the Samsung Galaxy Fold, using one large screen on the outside of the device that unfolds rather than one small outer screen and one large inner screen. Despite that difference, it's probably not a bad idea for Huawei to take a little extra time to test the Mate X and ensure it won't suffer from issues like the Galaxy Fold, especially given how expensive these foldable phones are.
