After raising prices for U.S. subscribers earlier this year, Netflix is now planning a price hike for its U.K. customers as well.
Netflix will increase the price of its streaming plans for U.K. subscribers by up to 20 percent. The standard plan will go up £1 to £8.99, The Guardian reports, while the premium plan will grow £2 to £11.99. The basic plan will remain at £5.99.
The basic Netflix plan offers streaming for just one screen at a time and omits HD streaming. Stepping up to the standard plan gets you HD streaming and the ability to watch on two screens at once, and the premium plan offers UHD streaming and support for watching up to four screens at once.
New Netflix customers will see these increased prices immediately, while existing customers will get them "over the coming weeks."
“We change our prices from time to time to reflect the significant investments we’ve made in new TV shows and films, as well as improvements to our product,” a Netflix spokesman explained. They added that even with the price hike, Netflix is still a "great value for money compared to other options on offer in the U.K."
The video streaming competition continues to heat up, with Netflix going head-to-head with existing services like Hulu as well as upcoming services like Disney+. By raising its price, Netflix can try to bring in more cash to put toward original content that it can use to fight services like Disney+, which is going to be aggressively priced at launch and will include content like Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel films.
