Ever since IGTV launched last year, the app has been all about full-screen, vertical video content. Now that's changing.
Instagram announced today that IGTV now supports landscape videos. "We’ve heard from creators who want to upload landscape videos for IGTV," Instagram explains. "Similarly, we’ve heard from viewers who come across landscape videos in IGTV but want to watch them in a more natural way."
With this change, users can turn their phone sideways and watch landscape videos fill up their entire screen rather than watching a small landscape video in portrait orientation.
"We realize this is an evolution from where IGTV started – we believe it’s the right change for viewers and creators," Instagram says in a blog post. "In many ways, opening IGTV to more than just vertical videos is similar to when we opened Instagram to more than just square photos in 2015. It enabled creativity to flourish and engagement to rise – and we believe the same will happen again with IGTV."
While IGTV was focused on full-screen vertical video at launch, some folks just prefer watching video in landscape. Plus, some creators like to offer their videos in landscape orientation rather than portrait. Now they have the option of enjoying videos in landscape orientation with IGTV.
