The Call of Duty franchise has seen a lot of iterations over the years. Some of those titles, like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare have helped change the landscape of the first-person shooter (FPS) landscape for the better. Other titles, like some of the newer options, haven't really made any waves at all. But there is no denying that Call of Duty, as a whole, is a juggernaut that will probably continue to make money into the foreseeable future.

So it certainly makes sense that Activision and the development houses it has its banner would want to capitalize on that property as often as it can. And while the franchise is refreshed on a yearly basis, there are plenty of months in between there that they can try to take advantage of. Launching more than one AAA title on consoles (and PC) doesn't make sense, though.

So what about a mobile game?

This is not the first time a game for smartphones and tablets with the Call of Duty title has seen the light of day, of course. There have been other options, including one with the franchise's popular zombies mode baked in. But if you haven't heard of any of those titles I don't think anyone would blame you.

So why will the newly-announced Call of Duty: Mobile be any different? Well, this time around the title is focusing primarily on standard multiplayer fare, which hopefully means the game will support wireless controllers right out of the gate (otherwise what's the point?). But, Activision also teased a battle royale mode (similar to Blackout, which launched with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 late last year) and what looks like a zombies mode as well.

Playing these types of games without a wireless controller can be a lesson in frustration and anger, or it can be "just okay". Wireless controller support is a necessity. But they can also be pretty fun, even if they do require a bit more of a time commitment than other mobile games.

I'm definitely going to check out Call of Duty: Mobile when it lands, if for no other reason than sheer curiosity. The question is: will it actually stay on my phone? Only time and experience will determine that.
