Sony's new flagship is here.
The Sony Xperia 1 is the world's first 4K OLED, says Sony. The device features a 6.5-inch 3840x1644 OLED HDR screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio that Sony calls CinemaWide. To help make watching videos on the Xperia 1 even more enjoyable, Sony has included Dolby Atmos sound with tuning that was developed with Sony Pictures Entertainment.
In addition to using that extra tall 21:9 screen for watching videos, Sony says that users can run two apps simultaneously. Sony touts that the tall screen will be good for gaming, too, and it has included a Game Enhancer that'll optimize the Xperia 1's performance and block unwanted notifications to help keep you focused.
Around back, the Sony Xperia 1 has a triple camera setup that includes three 12MP sensors. The main 12MP 26mm snapper offers f/1.6 aperture, OIS photo stabilization, and hybrid OIS/EIS video stabilization. Also included is a 12MP 16mm camera with 135-degree wide angle lens and a 12MP 52mm sensor with 2x optical zoom for telephoto shooting.
Inside the Xperia 1 is a Snapdragon 855 processor paired with 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a microSD card slot. A 3300mAh battery is included, too, along with Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC. There's a USB-C port on the bottom of the device, an 8MP camera on the front, and a fingerprint reader on the side. Both the front and back of the Xperia 1 boast Gorilla Glass 6, and Sony has made the whole device IP65/68 water resistant.
The Sony Xperia 1 will launch with Android 9 Pie in late spring. No pricing information has been revealed.
We've seen phones moving away from the 16:9 aspect ratio and becoming taller lately, with several phones launching with 18:9 or 19.5:9 aspect ratios lately. Now Sony is pushing things even further with the Xperia 1 and its 21:9 screen. That extra tall screen looks different, but we're interested to see what it'd be like to use day-to-day, especially with that 4K resolution and OLED screen tech. The Xperia 1 does stand out, which is something that Sony could use right now.
What do you think of the Sony Xperia 1? Does its 4K OLED display with 21:9 aspect ratio interest you?
