Those rumors of an Apple Smart Battery Case for the iPhone XS and iPhone XR turned out to be true.
Apple today released Smart Battery Cases for the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. All three models are available in black and white color options, and each one is priced at $129.
The new Smart Battery Case is compatible with Qi-certified wireless chargers, so you can just drop it onto the charging pad that you're already using for your iPhone XS or XR. If you'd prefer to recharge it more quickly, though, Apple says that the Smart Battery Case also works with USB-PD chargers.
Apple doesn't say how large the batteries inside its Smart Battery Cases are. However, the company claims that with one installed, the iPhone XS will get up to 33 hours of talk time, up to 21 hours of internet use, and up to 25 hours of video playback. The iPhone XS itself is listed as having up to 20 hours of talk time, up to 12 hours of internet use, and up to 14 hours of video playback.
The iPhone XS Max's Smart Battery Case will get you up to 37 hours of talk time, up to 20 hours of internet use, and up to 25 hours of video playback. That compares to up to 25 hours of talk time, up to 13 hours of internet use, and up to 15 hours of video playback for the iPhone XS Max on its own.
Finally, the iPhone XR's Smart Battery Case will provide up to 39 hours of talk time, up to 22 hours of internet use, and up to 27 hours of video playback. To compare, the iPhone XR on its own can get up to 25 hours of talk time, up to 15 hours of internet use, and up to 16 hours of video playback.
Apple previously sold Smart Battery Cases for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7, but these new models offer an updated design. The previous Smart Battery Cases had a rectangular hump in the middle, but these new models have a hump that extends all the way to the bottom, covering the bottom two-thirds of the case. This should make these updated Smart Battery Cases a bit easier to hold compared to the previous versions.
These new Smart Battery Cases aren't cheap, but that's not too surprising given that they're official Apple accessories. It's good to see Apple selling Smart Battery Cases again, offering an official accessory for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR owners who'd like to get more battery life out of their phones and add a little protection, too.
