Earlier this year, Vivo launched its new Nex flagship with a pop-up camera that allowed it to avoid using a notch. Now Vivo is back with another Nex phone and another method of avoiding the notch.
The Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition has two AMOLED screens, one on the front and one on the back. The front is a 6.39-inch 2340x1080 display, while the rear is a 5.49-inch 1920x1080 panel. Since there's no notch, the front screen can offer slim bezels all the way around with a 91.63 screen-to-body ratio. Meanwhile, the display on the back of the phone means you can use the rear cameras for your selfies or as a touchpad for gaming.
Around back is where all the cameras live. The Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition has three rear cameras that sit above the rear display. The main snapper is a 12MP Dual Pixel Camera with a Sony IMX363 sensor and optical image stabilization, and it's aided by a 2MP Night Vision camera that'll help you capture clear and stable footage in low light. And then there's the Time of Flight (TOF) 3D Camera, which offers 3D sensing capabilities that you can use for point-to-point distance measuring as well as enhanced facial recognition and "personalized beautification".
Another highlight feature of the new Vivo Nex is its Lunar Ring. Located on the back of the device, this glowing band of colors can be used to alert you to notifications and pulse with music. You can also use it to add a soft light to your selfies.
The rest of the Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition's spec sheet includes a Snapdragon 845 processor, 10GB of RAM, and 128GB of built-in storage. There's a 3500mAh battery powering this whole package and a USB-C port for recharging that battery, and an in-display fingerprint sensor built into the front screen.
The Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition will go on sale in China on December 29 at a price of 4,998 yuan, or around $724 USD.
Having two screens on your phone is an interesting way to avoid having a notch or cutout on your phone, but it does look kind of cool, too. The good news is that having two displays isn't the Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition's only gimmick, as it's also got some high-end specs to back up its design. The bad news is that it's unclear when or if this phone will be sold outside of China, so most of the world may not get a chance to give Vivo's dual screen device a try.
