Google today announced that it's working to improve the privacy and security of Project Fi.
Project Fi is now testing an enhanced network in beta. This means that Google is extending the Project Fi VPN to all connections so that all of your cellular and Wi-Fi data will be encrypted and sent through Google's virtual private network (VPN). Google says that its VPN is design so that your traffic isn't tied to your Google account or phone number, so no one can see your online activity.
Another feature of Project Fi's enhanced network is that it'll detect when your Wi-Fi connection becomes unusable and fill in the gaps with cellular data. For example, if you're walking away from a Wi-Fi connection and your data becomes slow and unusable, Project Fi will switch you to mobile data to keep your bytes flowing.
Project Fi's enhanced network will begin rolling out to phones on Fi with Android Pie later this week. You can enable it manually by going into Fi Network Tools section of the Project Fi app.
