Honor is known for offering well-spec'd devices at aggressive prices, and today the company announced the two latest pieces of that strategy.
The Honor 8X and Honor 8X Max are now official. As you might've guessed since it doesn't have "Max" in its name, the Honor 8X is the smaller of the two handsets, though that doesn't mean that it's small. The Honor 8X is packing a 6.5-inch 2340x1080 display that offers a 91 percent screen-to-body ratio and a notch up top that houses a 16MP camera. There's a small chin at the bottom of the display, too.
Around back there's a dual rear camera setup that includes 20MP and 2MP sensors with f/1.8 aperture. The Honor 8X's body includes a glass body with a metal middle frame, and inside that body is an octa-core Kirin 710 processor paired with 4GB or 6GB of RAM. Storage options include 64GB or 128GB, and there's a microSD slot in the dual SIM tray. There's a rear fingerprint reader, too, along with a 3.5mm headphone jack, Android 8.1, and a 3750mAh battery.
One other feature of the 8X that's being highlighted by Honor is its Eye Comfort mode. This feature aims to "reduce the blue light radiation emitted by the screen and prevent eye fatigue." Honor says that the 8X also features a sunlight mode to make the screen easier to read outdoors as well as a night mode that'll make reading before you go to sleep more comfortable.
The Honor 8X launched in China today at a starting price of 1399 yuan ($205 USD) for the 4GB/64GB mode. Pricing goes up to 1599 yuan ($234 USD) for the 6GB/64GB model and tops out at 1899 yuan ($278 USD) for the 6GB/128GB version. Honor does say that the 8X will gradually roll out to more overseas markets beginning in October, but no specific regions were named.
Also launching today is the Honor 8X Max. This device lives up to the "Max" in its name, boasting a 7.12-inch 2244x1080 display. Like its non-Max sibling, the Honor 8X Max has a notch at the top of its screen, but it's quite a bit smaller than the notch on the Honor 8X.
Another "Max" feature of this phone is its battery. Powering the Honor 8X Max is a 5000mAh battery pack. Thankfully, the Honor 8X Max supports fast charging, so you can recharge that big ol' battery in a hurry.
Other features of the Honor 8X Max include an 8MP front-facing camera, a dual rear camera setup with 16MP (f/2.0) and 2MP (f/2.4) sensors, an octa-core Snapdragon 636 processor, and 4GB of RAM. There's 64GB or 128GB of built-in storage included as well as a microSD card slot, a rear fingerprint reader, and Honor has included a 3.5mm headphone jack as well. The Honor 8X Max comes preloaded with Android 8.1.
Pricing for the Honor 8X Max starts at 1499 yuan ($219 USD) for the 4GB/64GB model. A 4GB/128GB model is available for 1799 yuan ($263 USD).
The Honor 8X and Honor 8X Max look like interesting devices. With the regular Honor 8X, you're getting a big screen and a pretty respectable feature set for an aggressive price, which could make the 8X a great option for folks in the market for an affordable Android phone. We've seen the Honor 6X and Honor 7X launch in the U.S., so hopefully the 8X lands stateside as well.
And then there's the Honor 8X Max, which has a monstrous screen that's about the same size as some small tablets used to be and an equally large battery. It's not the most high-end phone around, but for someone that just wants a big screen and a big battery to match, the Honor 8X Max could do the trick.
